Calenia Energia adopted combined cycle innovative technology, which has been able to achieve 56% more productivity and therefore rating the Axpo plant to be one of the most advanced plants of the latest generation.

Combined cycle technology matches ideally two distinct thermodynamic processes (natural gas combustion in the first turbine and the steam expansion deriving from that process in the next turbine); this method achieves a large increase in energy production and greater energy efficiency.

In comparison to a traditional plant, with the same power and fed by other fuels, the advantages of combined cycle technology clearly emerge, both in terms of emissions and of the fuel used.

As a matter of fact, combustion by natural gas molecules produces a smaller quantity of CO2 compared to oil and coal, it does not give off sulphurous emissions (the main cause of acid rain) and also given its gaseous nature, it produces insignificant amounts of polluting particles.

Lastly, the combined cycle increases heat efficiency, on average by more than 40% compared to other technologies and thanks to the lower quantities of fuel used, it has a reduction both in production costs and in emissions.
