From the start of the planning phase, the Calenia plant had as its primary objective, one of reaching the highest standards in limiting environmental impact.

The choice to use combined cycle technology was an important step towards reaching the aims set out in the Kyoto Pact, among which were reducing gas emissions and the greenhouse effect.

The Calenia Energia plant has its energy productivity set at around 56%, more than 40% above traditional thermoelectric plants and so it has consequently lower CO2 emissions (roughly 50% less compared to a coal fuelled plant).

Furthermore, the steps taken to safeguard the environment, which have also been related to acoustic pollution and the water intake supplies. Regarding these aspects, the most modern technology has led to better results than the current limits allow, according to the current laws in force.
